Adivasi Woman branded witch, killed on Intl Women’s Day

Even as the world outside observed International Women’s Day on Monday, at Sikriatanr in Simdega district of Jharkhand, a mob of 150 tribals branded a woman of their tribe as witch and beat her to death. According to 58-year-old Birsa Chik, his wife Geeta Devi (55) was accused of being a witch and killed. Her body was later sent to the Sadar hospital for post-mortem. Trouble began when two villagers, Muska Chick (57) and his nephew Sukra (45), were told by an exorcist that Muska’s 22-year-son Jairam, who probably suffered from typhoid, was a victim of a spell cast by Geeta. A panchayat was held and soon 150 Chik Baraiks charged at Geeta with sticks and beat her up till she died, according to the FIR filed by Birsa. None of the 10 persons, who were named in the FIR, were arrested till Tuesday.

Witch killing is a very serious concern in adivasi communities of Central India. Violence related to witchcraft is very often, though not always, directed to women. There are cultural and economic factors that go into witch killings, and very possibly the problem has multiplied several fold now. This merits urgent study and preventive action, including addressing the need gaps which give rise to this violence and building awareness.Arnab SenFlat # 1024 Sector C Pocket 1Vasant KunjNew Delhi 110070 INDIA

This is a great concern for all the tribal women including the non tribal women who live in the proximity of tribal familes. Even the educated familes settled in the cities like Ranchi and Jamshedpur believe in witch and pour unending money to Ojhas to help them from diseases and failure in proffesional life. So one can just imagine how deep rooted is this supersitution is. Inspite of the Witch Atrocitoes Act these are still happening. regards!Jyoti Sonia Dhan
